Jennifer Day resides and works in Newburyport, Ma. A
native to New England, she grew up in the Boston area
and was educated at Bowdoin College and subsequently
at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. Having
taught art at St. George's School and Phillips
Academy, the artist then went on to the Graduate
School of Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania
where she earned her MFA in painting under Neil
Welliver. For many years, the artist has balanced the
concentration on her own work with that of teaching.
She is a former adjunct professor of art at
Colby-Sawyer College.
Jennifer Day brings a somewhat unusual approach to
painting in that her pallette consists of one color,
usually black, on a white background. She believes
that having taught color theory and having been a
colorist at one point, she can better understand the
subtleties of grey. Similarly, the artist can
concentrate more intensely on imagined possibilities
of light and shade, much as black and white
photography exposes us to a construct that can only
exist in the imagination.
